Split: Rent a car and discover the sights
- Diocletian's Palace:
This is Split’s crown jewel; dating back to 305 AD, this UNESCO World Heritage Site, a former Roman palace, is very well-preserved. Visitors to Split can hardly avoid this incredible site, as it is still a residential area and occupies about half of the city centre. For those who want to go in-depth, walking tours and visits to the palace's underground catacombs are available. And no visitor should miss the palace's market which offers an array of local jewellery and crafts making for excellent souvenirs.
- Marjan:
The large hill next to the city centre, known as Marjan, makes for a great, short hike and rewards those who make the climb with terrific panoramic views of the city. Left almost totally undeveloped, the hill is in fact a gorgeous park, ideal for those who like to get into nature at some point during their otherwise urban holiday.
- Bacvice:
Load up your rental car with supplies and head to the beach where you’ll find excellent, clean conditions and clear blue water. If you want atmosphere, head to the city centre beach, Bacvice, which is adjacent to many restaurants and clubs. However, if you come to Split and rent a car, it’s worth making the trip out of the centre to Znjan Beach, which is large, quiet, and also offers superb swimming conditions.
- Krka National Park:
This park is just 85 km north of the city and is within easy reach when you hire a car in Split. The park's beautiful waterfalls have to be seen up close to be fully appreciated, so bring your bathing suit with you and dive right in. Many hiking trails can be found in the park, as can some superb birdwatching opportunities, including osprey, golden eagles, and peregrine falcons, among hundreds of other species which call Krka home.
Getting around by car in Split
Split is a large city, but its roads aren't too congested. Indeed, the challenge is navigating the narrow, winding streets that are found in the historic part of the city. Once you’re slightly out of that area, the streets are wide and easy to navigate. Croatian drivers are also friendly and patient, so you shouldn't have any trouble with your rental car in Split. Between October and March, dipped headlights must be on at all times.
