Getting around in San Francisco
Staying long term in San Francisco is made easy when you have a rental car at your disposal. Keep in mind that the city has many one-way streets, however, and that it's mandatory to wear seat belts. In residential and commercial areas the speed limit is 40 km/h, whereas it is 104 to 112 km/h on motorways (which you might take to get to neighbouring, recently revitalized Oakland). Be aware that speed limits in the US are set in mph.
Remember, San Francisco is in a hilly area, so the streets can be quite steep. Park your rental car properly: Downhill, make sure the wheels are curbed to the right whilst uphill, to the left. Parking brakes should be maxed to avoid that the car rolls down the street.
Parking can become a challenge in downtown San Francisco. Metered parking usually lasts half an hour. Make sure you are parked in the correct zone. If you are wondering why a street is empty, then it is highly likely that it is a cleaning day, so don't leave your car there!
