Zadar, an ancient city in central Croatia has it all. Roman ruins and medieval churches stand beside a modern promenade and exquisite beaches. It is no wonder that the city, characterised by Croatian red roofs, is a favourite amongst holidaymakers. When you rent a car in Zadar you will be able to explore the region's many attractions, such as the Kornati National Park, located just outside the city, as well as the Zadar Cathedral, the Church of St. Donatus, the ancient city walls and gates and the Roman Forum.

Rent a car: Zadar and its sights

  • Paklenica Nacionalni Park: Driving to the Paklenica Nacionalni Park when you rent a car from Zadar is a must for nature lovers. A UNESCO biological reserve, this beautiful park features forests, gorges and cliffs. Apart from appreciating nature’s bounty in all its grandeur, visitors can also engage in hiking and climbing as well as bird watching.

  • Zadar Cathedral: Parking in old town Zadar is possible, with a few parking lots and on-street spaces available around city. However, these can get busy and crowded. An idea for visitors to Zadar who opt for car rental would be to stay/park in Diklo, a few kilometres north of the old town, and take the local bus straight into the centre. Once there, it's easy to travel on foot and visit the medieval Cathedral and other sights. This beautiful church houses the remains of St. Anastasia and exhibits the characteristics of Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic architecture, which gives it a unique style. Visitors are struck by the beauty of the carved wooden choir, stone altars, bell tower and façade.

  • The Church of St. Donatus: This church is considered amongst the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in the country. It is located on top of the Roman Forum, the latter being a popular attraction in itself. After you have duly appreciated the church you can stroll around the Forum, which dates back to the 1st century AD, and observe the fine Corinthian columns and the remains of ancient buildings.

  • Ancient Ruins: A trip to Zadar is incomplete without a visit to the old city gates and walls, the oldest of which was constructed by the Romans with later additions made by the Venetians. Out of the remaining gates into the city, the Renaissance-style Land Gate is the most impressive.

Getting around Zadar

In Zadar, like the rest of Croatia, you should drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Road networks and connectivity in Croatia is good and therefore it makes sense for visitors to Croatia, and Zadar, to rent a car and see as much of this stunning country as possible. In case you are driving to Zadar from other incredible regions in Croatia, follow the highway A1 from Zagreb to Split.
