Rent a car: Athens and its sights

  • Parthenon: It is well worth visiting the Parthenon, which sits atop the Athenian Acropolis. Since 1986, this iconic structure has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and understandably so. Take a tour to get more in-depth knowledge on the history of this architectural wonder, or roam around it at your leisure. Either way, it is advisable to visit early or late in the day, as the midday sun can be rather intense up here.

  • National Archaeological Museum: Consider a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, where you will find a vast array of remarkable artefacts from various ancient periods. Fascinating objects on display here include pottery items, the Mask of Agamemnon, the Dedication of Nikandre, and much more. When you opt for car rental in Athens, you can reach the museum easily and avail of nearby parking.

  • Agora: The Agora is another place not to be missed. Once the political, social, and business meeting place for the people of the city, this is where they would congregate to gossip, see and be seen. Two large buildings remain in the Agora: the Temple of Hephaestus, the best-preserved temple in Greece and the Stoa of Attalos, originally used as a major shopping hub.

  • Peloponnese: When you hire a car, you can easily head out to the Peloponnese, a peninsula containing numerous ancient sites such as the city of Argos, the Mycenaean palace of Pylos and the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea. Load your auto with supplies and leave Athens for a thrilling excursion.

Getting around Athens by car

Whilst in Athens, renting a car allows you to get the most out of your visit, but be sure to bear the following things in mind. Always carry a valid International Driving License on you, note that seat belts must be worn at all times and remember that cars drive on the right throughout Greece. The rush hours last from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. and from 16:00 to 18:00 p.m., so plan your outings accordingly. Locals in Greece are usually friendly and happy to help when you need directions, so don’t be afraid to ask! Stay safe and avoid fines by keeping to speed limits, which means 30 km/h in small towns, 50 km/h in residential areas, and 110 to 120 km/h on motorways.
